Re: Transmission swap question

I don't think it would be worth it, even if it did match up considering the cost of a new transmission. I would assume a new computer module would be needed as well, keeping in mind that software is designed for the 3.5L which makes considerably more power/torque than the 3.0L. If it were me, I woul...

Brake Bleeding Procedures - Ford Five Hundred

Just put new rotors and pads on all fours and brake pedal seems lower than it should and spongy. I want to bleed the brakes the weekend. Is anyone aware of any special tips? I don't think I need the scan tool since there is already fluid in the system. I'm not just sure if having ABS changes the pro...

Re: Rear brakes this early???

There was a theory mentioned on this forum somewhere that the reason the rears are set-up to grab more is to minimize the nose-diving effect when braking. I would think with ABS on cars now, there is less concern about the rears locking up. Plus the fact that the pads are so small, 48K miles is pret...

Re: Brake Advice Needed

I'm currently having similar issues with my "06 Five Hundred. I can push the pedal to the floor if I push hard enough and it makes a sound similar to when the anti-locks activate (even though there is no wheel lock-up). It is due for new rotors and pads but wondering if it also something else.

Re: 2005 Front Strut replacement tips/tricks???

All you have to do is lower the subframe. There is a 21mm bolt (need impact wrench to lower the assembly down. It will give you another 2 inches or so to clear the steering knuckle.

IMO, I think the 500 is a good safety pick for a teen drvier. As far as safety, I would get the front-end checked (e.g. tie-rods, struts) and brakes. Other than that I would think you're good to go.

I 've been looking as well and haven't seen anything. It's even hard to find more aggressive springs and shocks. As you said, there probably isn't much demand for cars like these. Although you'd think there would for WHO owners.

Re: Can I use different oil than is suggested in the manual?

0W-40 protects better than 5W-20 which is why most premium engines do not recommend 5W-20 (would you put 5W-20 in a Porsche?). The question is whether the additaionl viscosity benefits a Duratec 3.0 which is a pretty mild engine (although durable).

Re: What struts for 2005 Five Hundred

Just put new front struts on (KYBs). Not a bad job if you have air tools. The hardest part is getting the old strut out. The wheel knuckle goes down about 1-2 inches less than it needs to get the old strut out and new one in. The solution is to lower the sub-frame down to get the necessary clearance...

Re: 2005 Ford Five Hundred CVT Transmission Fluid change?

I've have gotten different stories from various dealers. After changing it myself at 60k, I would definitely recommend getting it changed (the fluid was as dark as used motor oil and was nearly clear when its new). I believe a lot of service techs think that the maintenance schedule and fluid used i...

Seems like you covered the main areas. Stupid question, but how about fuel pressure (regulator/pump). I'm assuming you have changed air filter recently?

Re: Can I use different oil than is suggested in the manual?

You'll be good with synthetic 0W-40 (no damage). Conventional oil cannot cover as wide of span in terms of viscosity which is why they recommend 5W20 for those who don't want to pay extra to go synthetic . I used to use 0W-50 Castrol Syntec for years with no problems. Good luck with your new ride.

How bad is the hummming? Is it only when you give it gas? If it were my car, I would just drive it unless it is ridicously loud / annoying.

Recommendation for good pads and rotors

I plan to put on new rotors and pads for both front and rear soon. I currently have ATE ceramics and Centric rotors with about 50,000 miles they pulsing like mad at highway speeds. My stock pads / rotors did the same (with a lot more brake dust as well). My commute is tough on brakes as sudden stops...

Re: 2010 Ford Taurus SHO is the worst car I have ever owned!

I think it's crap that a car should have more problems with 1st year model than any other especially when someone is forking over nearly $40k. That's what testing is for. You also should be able to "drive it like you stole it" without having problems for at least 100K miles. The last car I bought wa...

Doesn't seem like bearing if it is doing it more under acceleration. Sounds more like gear-related noise if it is doing it more under load. Mine has been whiny but figured it was the tranmission somewhere.
