2010 Lincoln MKS Trade - Reliable?

Post by PeterNC » Sat Dec 17, 2016 8:37 pm

Got a trade in offer of $12K for my 2010 Toyota Avalon Limited with 85K miles for a $16.5 2010 Lincoln MKS FWD (not eco boost) with 11K miles. :D

What do you guys think? Is a 2010 Lincoln MKS going to be reliable? I liked the test drive. But after my 2008 Ford Taurus SEL AWD repairs drama (106K miles) I am leery.

Reliable compared to a Toyota?

If it has the 3.5L engine you need to be worried about the water pump taking out the engine. I'm not aware of known issues with Avalons.

Thanks! The 2010 Lincoln MKS has the 3.7L Cyclone.

Probably going to skip it. $5K would pay for a lot of Avalon repairs. ;) *knock wood*

Ah the 3.7L engine is also eligible for the water pump issue.

FWIW there are a few resources that can help you figure out which vehicles are reliable and which are not.

https://www.carcomplaints.com

http://www.truedelta.com/car-reliability

The downside to those two sites is they only have data based on owners signing up and contributing (in other words, a small portion of owners). So Consumer Reports would be a better choice if you have a subscription, as they have a huge member base.

Cool. No MKS. Buying insurance / extended service to address the risk puts the price way over the top.

I've owned probably a couple dozen vehicles of many different brands. The most reliable brand I've owned is Toyota, the least was Jeep. Ford's quality has come a long way in the last decade or so but given the choice between Ford & Toyota on the front of reliability, I'd bet on the Toyota. Now, with that said, Toyotas are more like appliances ;-) You'd be hard pressed to get me to buy a Dodge/Ram/Jeep/Chrysler though, their quality is still atrocious generally.

Had to replace the water pump on my Avalon this week. The nice thing was that it was a $300 job. Not a $1,000+ job like with my 2008 Ford Taurus SEL back in 2015. :)

Turns out the Avalon engine probably overheated to the point of irreversible damage in May. Last week the engine lights came back on. There was no leak but the coolant resevoir was empty (indicative of head gasket leak). Cylinder 2 was also misfiring. Plus other error codes read from the OBC. Replaced the coil and spark plug in cylinder 2: no result. Also very strong trembling. Very expensive repair so I traded it in.
