I seem to remember a TSB on this concern. I'll look it up when I get time.

Something to do with the seat heater grids.

It's either caused by a fat a$# or poor design. :o

Americans are well known for having fat asses, so that should be considered in the design.

(If they could come up with an effective a$# reduction device, that would be a big seller.)

The root cause is probably a combination of the two,fat asses and poor design.

By the way, the driver's side heated seat was kaput on my used '09 Taurus that I bought last month. When the button was pressed, NO lights would go on. Turned out it needed a new coil (?) pad under the seat. Got it fixed two weeks ago under warranty and it seems fine now.

Ours is going in this week for the driver's heated seat, as well as probable bad trunk lid struts. Wonder what's next. They'll probably try to tell me there is nothing wrong.

I took my car to the dealer on Friday to get the seat heater repaired, and the service writer denied ever having encountered the problem before. If anyone knows of a TSB on this, please post it, so I can enlighten the locals.

They were unable to handle it immediately, so I'm going back Monday morning.

Here is a heated seat TSB for cars built prior to 12/14/07

TSB 09-4-8

03/09/09
INOPERATIVE HEATED SEAT(S) - BUILT
BEFORE 12/14/2007

FORD:
2005-2007 Five Hundred, Freestyle
2008 Taurus X, Taurus

MERCURY:
2005-2007 Montego
2008 Sable

ISSUE
Some 2005-2007 Freestyle, Five Hundred, Montego and 2008 Taurus, Sable and Taurus X vehicles built before 12/14/2007 may exhibit an inoperative heated seat(s). This concern may be caused by an intermittent open element in the heated seat mat.

ACTION
Follow the Service Procedure steps to correct the condition.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

The heated seat system is controlled by the heated seat module located underneath the front passenger seat cushion. The heated seat switches are part of the heating ventilation air conditioning (HVAC) module but the heated seat system operates independently from the climate control system. The heated seat module regulates seat temperature by monitoring resistance of a thermistor type thermostat located in the cushion heater mat. The heated seat module is designed to remain on, heating the seat and maintaining temperature until switched off. For vehicles built before 5/1/2006, the module will time-out and switch off after 10 minutes.
1. Refer to Workshop Manual (WSM), Section 501-10 for pin point test on inoperative heated seat(s).

a. When testing the heater mats resistance and circuits for an intermittent open, technicians should sit in the seat while testing the circuit resistance, move the seat in multiple seating positions and apply pressure to several areas of the heated seat mat to ensure the mat element is not open intermittently.

2. Refer to WSM 501-10 for heated seat element replacement when an open electrical circuit has been identified.

Thank you kmohr3 and tpr676!

I hope they fix it with more robust components than the originals. When you consider that this feature is used only in winter, and not all the time even then, it seems like an early failure.

For sure I'll say our seat heater been on no more than few hours total, it's not something that gets a lot of use and there no reason it should of crapped out by now other than a cheap part. My concern with this cheap parts is when the warranty runs out.........

It's probably not a matter of "use" as far as the heating element goes. My guess is something breaks internally just from the pressure of sitting on the seat.
