Five Hundred Clock in a Montego

Post by andysinnh » Wed May 07, 2008 12:11 pm

So a few weeks ago I bought from Claude in Quebec a white-faced 500 clock in an effort to get a more visible clock face for my Montego, which has the darker (black/grey) faced one from the factory. I was always having a difficult time reading the clock, due either to the glare from the plastic covering, or the fact that it wasn't really a black face - more grey - and it just made it hard to see. Given that some of the imports that started this whole "round clock" thing always had white-faced clocks, I figured I'd give it a go on the 'Tego.

Below is a photo from my flicker.com page showing the white clock on the stock Montego dash layout. Thoughts? I personally like it!

A close-up of the clock. The 500 clock has a brushed/dull plastic surround, whereas the Montego clock has a polished/shiny plastic surround ( to match the gauge cluster surrounds) - so I swapped the Montego surround to the 500 clock before the install. Here's a close-up...

Well done, Andy. May consider doing the same for our Montego.

Seems to have turned out well. For me, it would be a "why bother" issue.

The one thing I hated about the 'tego is that dark wood. That alone drove me to buy the 500 instead.

You sounds just like my wife. :-) Before she bought her freestyle she sat in a Montego (albeit with the dark interior) and hated the woodgrain. But the other thing that bugged here was the dashboard layout in both the 500/'Tego - and the FS has a bit of a more "sporty" look (and ligher woodgrain on the Limited) so that's what she went with.

When I bought the clock from Claude, it also included the woodgrain trim around the clock - the one from the 500. I looked into some vendors on ebay and actually found the rest of the dash pieces to convert the console/radio surround/speedo surround to the ligher wood - but that'd have run me about $200 - and to me, that's when the 'why bother' meter struck. So if anyone needs a woodgrain trim piece that goes across the dash to the passenger side, let me know. :-)

Looks just like the clock in my 500. Looks good.

So you have mixed "wood" in your car?

Nope -all the wood is the dark grey type - have that brown woodgrain piece that surrounds the clock (came in the 'bundle' from claude), and was CONSIDERING upgrading the other dash pieces from grey to brown - but wasn't worth the cost. so sitting in a box under my desk is an unattached brown trim piece.... Another issue for me was that even if I did upgrade the dash pieces that the door trim around the swtiches would not match....
