Window Tint Revisited

Post by scerruti » Wed Jan 04, 2006 11:36 pm

I have been researching window tint all day so I wanted to post some of this information before I forgot it all.

Window Tint Types
Dyed - Least expensive, prone to color change, shortest lifespan
Metal - Prevents heat as well as light, will not fade, may block radio signals
Hybrid - Combination of Dyed and Metal typically less reflective than metal film but with heat blocking properties
Ceramic - Most expensive, benefits of metal films without interference with radio signals, recommended for vehicles with internal GPS antennas

Laws
Tint Laws by State
States typically regulate VLT for the film or net (film+window), reflectivity and colors (banning red, amber, yellow and/or blue).
Some states require certificates for the window tint.

Terms
Visible Light Transmission (VLT) is the percentage of light allowed to pass through the film.
Reflectivity is the percentage of light (or energy) reflected from the film, a higher reflectivity results in a more metallic appearance. A high reflectivity can also cause problems at night if an interior light is turned on.
Absorbtion is the light or energy absorbed by the film. This energy may then be conducted or radiated out as heat. This is the balance of the light or energy that is neither transmitted nor reflected.

Professional Installation
Tint should be installed indoors in a clean environment.
Windows should be done in a single piece without cuts. In some cases where multiple pieces must be used because of size seams should be undetectable.
You should choose a tint with a lifetime factory warranty, however if you select a less expensive tint you should get at least a 5 year warranty. The 5 year option may be satisfactory for leased vehicles or if you trade vehicles frequently.

Does $260 sound right for installed window film with a lifetime guarantee? Just curious.

I just had mine done at 35% doors and back window for 179.00 in indianapolis. I did my research also and they were the only ones in town with the higher grade tint. Ive had many car windows tinted and they've never looked this good. It made a difference. I chose to go lighter because i thought it looked much classier. One thing i like about it is you can get a full view of the gauges outside along with my portable XM on the dash at night. Looks real clean.

I have FormulaOne 35% Ceramic all around on my '05 Five Hundred.

It looks great! Unfortunately, I don't have any pictures handy.

I decided on 3M mainly because I can get it fixed at any 3M dealer if there are problems. 3 years later and its great. My 3 year old sits in the back and it was cooking him. The metallic tint reflects the heat well. I've never experienced cell phone problems. Cost was under $200.

Ok so I know that some people on here have tinted windows on their 500's so let me pose a question that I'm wondering. When you roll your window down, is there a streak when you let it down? I had this company tell me that it was b/c all 500's have a rubber stop gaurd at the bottom of the window so it was gonna cost me an extra 50 bucks per door. Do this sound about right to anyone? I called several places but this is the only guy that told me this. Any thoughts please?

I cant recall a streak...ive never heard that. I took mine in to the best place in indianapolis and they didnt say anything like that. Its not a huge chain and these guys know almost everything about cars. Just them saying 50 dollars extra sounds like they need to buy lunch for the guys and couple beers that night. I wouldnt go through them. Sounds shady.

Ok well that's good to know thanks for all the insight. I plan on getting tinted up this weekend and after I get a good car wash (even though its gonna rain) I'll post some pics on my car domain page and link it up. Oh got a really good deal on some 3M film. A company here in the STL is running a special he is gonna tint up everything for $150. The state law here in MO is 35% in the front and whatever in the back. Thinking bout going 35% front, 25% back and 15% in the rear, what do you guys think?

I have a black 500 with grey interior so i went 35% all the way around. Knowing that when you look directly through both windows from one side to the other its double the darkness. I love the way that light tint on luxury cars (not saying i own a benz) but the way that it looks on luxury cars and wanted to go that route. Some have almost a blue tint to it. Well the ones that are in the 100,000 dollar range... Its super clean looking, light classy... some people need that blacked out look but im not a huge fan of it. At night its dark enough and during the day you can still check out the honeys in there rides.

Ok Guys here it is. http://www.cardomain.com/ride/3304556 Tell me what you think about here. I got 30% all around and I think it just looks amazing. Still a lil illegal but soo close that I hope they don't notice. (Hoping the Peanut butter guts will help with that). Will try and put the picks on here soon but if you guys love cars the way I do, then there is nothing wrong with having in a couple differents place. :D
