2014 Taurus Battery Hazard

I have a 2014 Taurus SEL with an OEM Motorcraft Battery. I haven't checked the battery in a while.

I arranged an oil change and inspection with my local Ford Dealer in Spring Hill Florida on Thursday (09/28/17). We picked up the car after hours after we paid for services in advance.

As far as I could see from the paperwork everything was OK, tires rotated (I hope) and most of all, the battery was listed as OK.

By Friday evening I noticed slow starting as in a low battery would produce. Saturday I received a Low Tire Pressure warning on the dash but the tires looked OK.

Saturday the battery failed and the car needed to be jump started. After inspecting the battery, I initially saw that the red plastic protective cover was completely opened exposing the positive terminal.

I also noticed huge amounts of corrosion along with some other substance on each terminal (something that appeared to be just applied and brand new) as if they applied it as a combative or preventative measure to the existing corrosion.

Today being Sunday, I could not reach anyone so I wanted to clean the terminals and remove some of the corrosion in hopes for a full charge. As I was disconnecting the Positive terminal, I noticed the post was extremely loose and moving back and forth!

In further diagnosis, I found that the entire terminal post was loose from within the battery itself and moving freely inside of the battery. I have asked several people about this and everyone said they never heard of the post itself breaking lose.

I know Ford Customer Service monitors this forum (or at least used to) and I am in hopes to get to the bottom of this Monday (tomorrow) by calling the dealer.

I think I am owed an explanation as to why:

1) Why the new substance was applied to an existing corroded battery without warning me first of the corrosion itself and suggesting possible additional service.

2) Why the red protective plastic cover was left completely open, completely exposing the Positive terminal connections.

3) Why my battery was checked off OK when I clearly felt the positive terminal post moving back and forth about a 1/2 inch in all directions (by hand). The electric eye in my battery still shows green but will no longer hold a charge.

4) If my tires were just checked, rotated and inspected, why did my tire pressure light all the sudden come on the day after I left and has never come on prior to this?

In efforts to all around better customer service & satisfaction, I hope they offer to stand behind the Motorcraft battery and replace it! I was told by a mechanic, it was probably a manufacture defective battery from the beginning because the post should not break free completely as it was.

I do believe that something that was done at the dealership initiated this because my vehicle never showed a sign of slow cranking and all of this transpired the following day after picking up my car from service. This car has seen two winters in Chicago, never a slow crank or jump-start needed.

I don't think that my tire developed a slow leak but time will tell. I am mostly concerned of the battery hazard and something shorting out, possibly catching fire.

When I opened the hood to check the battery, the image I posted is exactly how I found it and the dealer left it after inspection.

Any input would be appreciated in advance.

Its called the tech being lazy. Thats unacceptable and I would have them clean those terminals and make the repairs free of charge. I monitor my dealership. They once marked my air filter clean and it was dirty as hell. I took a picture of the dirty filter next to my receipt and asked if that was acceptable to them. They were really embarrassed.

Yes, and to me, it is a hazard being they left the protective cover off. I will be in contact with them tomorrow and if I don't like the outcome I will contact Ford for the defective battery itself.

On a further note, we asked them to inspect the radio display which was out (the one that indicates the radio stations, etc). We were told they needed to open the dash and remove that to decipher the exact model number because there could be more than one.

Wouldn't you think they needed to disconnect my battery for this? Perhaps they broke the post in the battery accidentally but why would they not tell me?

FYI, The Ford CSRs have been gone for over a year.

Are you out of comprehensive warranty? The battery is covered for 3 years or whatever mileage (60K?). Did you talk to the dealer today?

Yes I was in the hook for battery and positive terminal. 51k would have to check the month purchased?

hi,
I just had the same exact thing happen to me yesterday. I have a 2015 ford Taurus. I was running around doing errands and stopped at a retail shop and went back to my car about 45 minutes later. car would not start and no power. My positive side of my battery under the red cover looked just like yours except mine was a lighter green color. I am at an expense of over $700 right now. a battery should not coorode like this.
what do I do now???

I complain to the service manager because I had just did the oil change a day before that. He offered me the battery at cost installation free. I did have to spring for the cable clip but I did get that at cost for about 30 bucks. He also threw in another oil change for good gesture. Overall I'm okay with the outcome since I myself have neglected the battery. I should have done a little bit concerning at least once a year. Good luck
