Car running but will not move

I have a 96 Taurus GL with only 48,800 miles on it. For the past couple of days while driving the car would not accelerate although the rmps would go up. After turning the car off and back on it would immediately drive and accelerate just fine.

Today the same thing happened, however, this time the car would not move in any gear. I've checked the transmission fluid and there is plenty in there. Car starts and sounds like it is running fine. Had to have it towed home.

Can my transmission be toast with only 48,800 miles on it? What else could the problem be?

P.S. There are only 48,800 miles on it because it sat in someone's driveway for years. I became the owner of it two months ago. Had to replace cam sensor, fuel pump, have rust cleaned out of gas tank, oil changed, radiator flushed, plugs and wires changed. Just got codes for O2 sensors a couple days ago.

My '99 Taurus SE had 126,000 miles when I was having the same problems as you. I replaced the VSS - Vehicle Speed Sensor (that was a tough one) and it ran for maybe a few weeks/months. I don't remember but it ended up being my transmission. It wasn't shifting into 4th gear when I was on the freeway but yet my rpm's were maxing out.
Let me know if you ever fixed your problem.
