Cars idles at 20-mph after cleaning throttle body? HELP!!!!

Post by michaelmiller85 » Thu May 30, 2013 3:35 pm

My dad has a 2006 Five Hundred with 216,000 miles. It has a 2 problems, one of which was at times the car when at very slow speeds would surge a little. We took it into the local Ford Dealer and he said that a common problem with these cars is that the throttle body gets all gunked up with oil and etc over time. He recommended it to be cleaned.

I was to cheap to let the dealer do it so I went a parts store and purchased throttle body cleaner. I didn't remove the throttle body from the car or unplug the electrical connection. I unhooked the breather hose which is between the air filter and throttle body and then sprayed the cleaner in, wiped with cloth, rotated the butterfly valve for better cleaning inside, wiped again until all oil residue was gone.

Put everything back together. Started with difficulty due to all the cleaner. Idles in neutral around 700RPM. Shift it into drive or reverse and the car lurches forward and if on flat ground will run about 20-30mph with foot of pedal.

The car didn't do this prior to the cleaning! It only occassionally surged/hestitated, but didn't always runoff. What could of happened? Did something become uncalibrated with the butterfly valve electric motor?

Please help!

Welcome to the site! I would start by double-checking all connections, if you have a vacuum leak it could cause weird things. Check all hoses leading to/from the air intake tract. Also, double check that all electrical connectors are tight, like the IAC. You may have bumped something else which is causing your problem.

I had the exact same problem after cleaning mine. All I did was make sure the PCV hose was secured to the intake (to correct any vacuum leak there). I also unplugged the battery for a few minutes and reconnected. Not sure which was the problem, but I'm good now.

I told my dad to unhook the battery last night. He reconnected it this morning and is 90% better! Still has issues but doesn't scare them to drive it.
