Police Interceptor

Post by addkev » Thu May 03, 2012 9:04 pm

I saw my first Taurus Police Interceptor in person today. County sheriff had someone pulled over on the side of the highway. I couldn't tell whether it was a SHO or not, since both models have dual exhaust.

I saw one at my local dealer the other day. Isn't that a special engine altogether? Even more 'go' than the SHO?

It's funny how we're all 'trained' to recognize a police vehicle. I noticed this one from way across the lot and knew what it was from the wheels. 8)

I saw a bunch recently at the dealer near our company HQ in Wisconsin...and yes, the wheels are a dead giveaway...also the RSA tires...and the dual exhaust tips are different from the civilian versions as they don't have the chrome "tips" on them, just plain steel pipes like on the police Impala's.

Looks nice, North Carolina plates and your in San Diego......Thats one H#** of a zoom lens... what are you 5000X zoom?....LOL!!! Appears to be a rainy wet roads accident.....Also appears to be a Corvette in the ditch. Also appears to have a dealer sticker underneath the left tail light...I thought government agencies were supposed to have them removed.

Good photos and looks nice, not sure how the final versions came out but Interceptors were rumoured to have Collumn Shifters to allow room for light control panels, and laptops.

You're sooooo close. I'm a Marine and we recently moved back to NC from SD. I thought it was a Corvette or Z in the ditch, turned out to be a 2 door Altima.

I found this one today. I drove by it but couldnt grab camera phone in time....this one is from Google Images. No interior photos on this one but a fairly reliable source says that the radar installation is in the center of the console. There is a cutout that is normally used if you have the Premium sound speaker. That area is used for the radar unit on the Interceptor versions. I like the Black and White paint scheme.

Still have not seen any, not that I want to, however on my recent drive (Florida to Western New York, plus Western NY to and from Eastern NY), I saw as many Dodge Chargers as I did Ford Crown Vics.

I defintely think that the Chargers are an East Coast thing. However, saw another Bull today, solid white, unmarked city cop.

We see quite a few Chargers here in the Midwest but Crown Vics still rule big time. I've seen some cop Bulls in a lot in Wicosnsin but none so far on the street.

Supposedly Chicago P.D. purchased 500 units...That is the first major deprtment purchase that I have heard of.

Crown Vics are still a major force, I have heard of some departments purchasing additional units before production stopped for use as spares and replacements as older models finally meet their service life limits.

Yes, I see rows of plain unmarked white Crown Vics at the Illinois State Police garage in Downers Grove, IL which I assume are such "spares" and replacement units. We'll be seeing Vics around for quite some time to come I'm thinking.

The city I live in from what I've heard buys cop cars based solely on the purchase price (the lowest). So they have a bunch of Chargers, I guess they were $100 less than CVs LOL. The bigger city about 40 miles away stocked up on Crown Vics when news came out that Ford was ending production of them.

I think Ford is going to lose a lot of market share, time will tell. Dodge has the Charger and I hear GM is coming out with something comparable. I know most folks don't consider the Taurus AWD, so in people's minds the Ford Interceptor is more like a FWD. Time will tell if Ford made the right decision when they had 70% of the cop car market and dropped the CV...

Here in Oregon the state patrol started buying Chargers about 2 years ago, it's about a 50/50 split right now whether you see a CV or a Charger. Portland Police are starting to integrate Chargers also. Word I hear is that they are scared of the Taurus because of bad experience they had Taurus police package front wheel drive cars back in 1991 - 1992. Have not seen a Caprice PPV at all in the region yet.

I just saw an article that the California Highway Patrol switched the Ford SUV as their standard patrol vehicle. Most of our Departments are still kicking around what to purchase. I have seen one Caprice PPV but everyone else has been buying Tahoes. Should be interesting to see how the market comes out.

I see these cars every day!

The plant that does the police package is next to my plant.
(where all of the front and rear uni body frame components
are made.)

Its kinda cool to drive my 2013 Taurus past a long line of
future police cruisers, and do a little tire spin before leaving
the parking lot.

Its cool to have a personal connection to both my car and
the police cruisers I see around town. A little home town
pride when I get into my Taurus at the end of a long day.
You break it (need another smoke break?), I fix it! (missing my smoke break.).
Lucky you! Ahhh the exciting life of the Maintenance_Man
