2013 Taurus Police Interceptor

Post by tallica8402 » Fri Sep 07, 2012 11:28 am

I was recently issued a new Taurus for work. (I'm a cop in Montgomery AL). Anyway, I am in traffic and we are on the interstate a lot so I had extra lights installed in my old car, which was a 2008 Crown Vic. Well i want to take those lights and get them installed in my Taurus but apparently Ford is telling our fleet manager that if any "extra" lights that are installed it will fry the electrical system. Currently the car has a Code 3 Patriot light bar on it, Whelen Vertex Lights in the headlights and taillights plus two Whelen Ions in the back windshield. All the whelen stuff comes factory from Ford when the pd bought the car. The light bar was added after we got it. Now all the lights I have are whelen and are LED as well. I have a Dominator 6 to go in the front grill, a Dominator 8 to go the back windshield, a tag bracket with 2 LINZ 3s, and 2 LINZ 6s for the doors. What do you guys think? Or have yall heard anything?

I'm far from an electrical engineer so I'll gladly defer to others here who are more electrically savey, but I've got to think that LED's draw so little power that what you're describing will have minimal impact on the car's electrical system. Also, I've seen a number of videos on YouTube of the new Taurus based interceptor with seemingly gobs of aftermarket lights installed and they're still cranking just fine.

I completely agree, LEDs pull very little amperage.

As an afterthought I can't help but wonder if Ford is telling your fleet manager to keep away from "aftermarket" lights so you're more likely to buy them from Ford? I know we'll all be very interested to hear of your experience with your new Taurus based interceptor as you can't really put a car through tougher duty than what you do. By the way, does your new squad have the "EcoBoost" six or the normally aspirated motor, and how do you find the acceleration, etc.?
Thanks.

Does your squad have MyFordTouch? In the other Interceptor post, the pics show the MFT buttons on the steering wheel. I am very surprised they would include that on a Interceptor/fleet vehicle.

Its the ecoboost and its pretty damn fast. The handling is great too and the brakes are amazing! We also have some new caprices with the 6.0 v8 and it barely beats them. I actually chased down a gxr 600 the other day too. And yea the vehicle is fully loaded, mp3 cd player and all; with the controls on the steering wheel. I can take the car home 7 days a week and i have an off duty job tomorrow so if i remember ill take some pics.

and actually the awd ecoboost comes standard unless you order the fwd naturally aspirated v6 from ford.

All in all, its the best police car ive driven. I driven the Caprice, Crown Vic (obviously), and Tahoe.

The guy at our radio shop did me a solid and put the radar display and brain in the hole in the dash and made a cover for it. I was really impressed by it.

I see the car has a column shift. What does the console look like without the shifter?

Here in PA the new Police cars are showing up by the truck load, literally. Most of the local townships are grabbing them and in all forms.

The State Police have ordered them as well.

Marked cars, unmarked cars, some with non-police wheels…

The truth is there are probably more of the new Police versions around than there are civilian Taurui. The only way to spot the unmarked ones is to look for the antenna.

Thankfully here in PA the locals can’t use radar Lol.

They’re everywhere!!!

I’ve seen two console versions. One is like the rear arm rest we are used to but without the front part the other is a steel mounting bracket with a massive harness and tons of mounting holes for all the gear.

Both have front mounting brackets for everything else they need.

I can’t confirm this but from everything I’ve seen so far from the commercial fleet site is only a partial list. Seems you can get them pretty much them way you want.

I know the Unmarked Crown Vics were a little fancier, carpeting in them. I wonder if the unmarked Taurus will be much different from the marked, shifter on console etc.

While driving to Wausau, WI the other day I saw two Wisconsin State Patrol cars in the Hwy 94 median facing in opposite directions...one was an older markeed CVPI and the other was a dark grey unmarked Taurus based interceptor. I couldn't tell much about it at the speed we were driving and needing to keep my eyes on the road ahead but it was something we don't see all that often so I definetly took notice just the same.

I am curious to see how these cars compare to the Crown Vic over time. I have to think that the Crown Vic, with it's body on frame construction and more simplistic (but beefy) setup is a better configuration for cop duty in the long term.
