I came across this thread looking for something else, but I have to say one thing:

The SHO with Performance Package gets the coolant-cooled PTU, upgraded tranny cooling, bigger radiator, better brakes, springs, etc. Plus the 3.16:1 final drive.

Also, hold down the traction-control button for 5 seconds with your foot on the brake and completely shut off Stability Control. Could probably do a J-turn after that if you wanted to.

While the price difference is still there, you really can get an SHO with almost if not all the performance-enhanced options that the PI comes with except maybe the "service PTU" light on the dash - if there is one.

As for "pursuit mode" - my SHO w/PP in sport mode once I start pounding on it gets into a state where it downshifts much faster when I'm on the brakes, etc. Once I stop pounding on it, it goes back to normal.

I'm not advocating one version over the other, just trying to correct some of the misinformation in this thread.

CVN transplant. I drove 1 CVLX and 5 CVPI's. Enjoyed all of them. Not the most decked out in terms of features. Though it is nice to see the Taurus bring a new layer of standard features to the Police Vehicle. The reliability is hard to beat. Then add a little more HP and AWD. Sounds like a delightful composition.

This is my first post on this site! I'm just reading various posts and getting up-to-speed on the Taurus interceptor.

I'm another transplant from CVN. I just picked up a 2013 AWD Taurus Interceptor today at a government auction. For the last 25 years I've had police package cars from government auctions as daily drivers. I get another one every 4 or 5 years. I've had great luck with all the cars, starting with a 1987 Chevy Caprice with a 350 4bbl, and then progressing through a bunch of Crown Vic P71s. I'm handy with a wrench and I like the challenge of getting a good deal at a government auction, fixing anything that needs fixing, adding civilian wheels etc. so the cars "blend in" better with traffic, and then using the cars for commuter duty for several years.

After driving Fox-body Mustangs for many years, I have owned 3 CVPI's, and now this 2015 Interceptor Sedan (Taurus). My first was a 1997 former Florida Highway Patrol CVPI that I bought with 101,000 miles. I paid $3300 for it, drove it for 12 years till 256,000 miles, then sold it for $2200. Can't go wrong with that. Sure I went through 2 intake manifolds and 3 transmissions, but it was still well worth it. Ford builds these vehicles to last under tough conditions. I love my new Interceptor Sedan, and I know it was built with the same attention to quality and durability that the CVPI's were. Ford needs to compete with the Dodge Charger and whatever Chevy wants to consider a police car, so a huge amount of effort and attention is put in to these vehicles. Not to mention, it is a much easier commute to work when most other drivers, who are paying attention, are more than happy to get out of your way when they see your car in their rear-view mirror :)

^^^This^^^, I have one sitting here right now that took a 70+ rear end collision while stationary, the car is junk, but the officer was uninjured.....well, for the most part.

The bracing in the rear took a good shot, otherwise the rear bumper would have been in the front seat...... literally.

my truck died and i wanted a full size sedan without paying an arm and a leg.

heavy duty suspension, additional transmission, oil + power steering coolers + the 75mph read crash protection were frosting on the cake.

+ it was a great deal.

My “fascination” is probably different than that of others in that I was ONLY ever interested in unmarked versions. The whole point was to have police internals without police looks, no spotlights, no antennas, no pushbars, nothing. Also, I’ve always wanted a new one, or at least as close to new as possible. I certainly never wanted one that had been in police service. How did my fascination start? Read on.

My first car was a 1984 2dr Crown Vic. It was a great car, kind of a bare-bones version, manual windows, locks, one huge bench seat in the front. Loved that car to pieces, drove it barely 100 yards to high school (everyone else drove, so what was I going to do, walk?). As I was learning more about my car, I learned about what the Police Package was and what it came with, and I thought “that would be cool”. But all the used ones (back then they were mostly seen at third-tier small dealers who specialized in near-junk) looked and felt just awful, so I decided I had to have a new one. In April of 1993 I was picking up some parts at Warnock Ford (170 Ridgedale Ave, Morristown, NJ) when I saw IT. What was IT? IT was a twilight blue 1992 Crown Vic with a full cloth bench seat interior, big (15”!) hubcaps, cassette deck(!), power driver’s seat, the whole works! IT was just so beautiful! It was only around $19,000 and a bit. I needed my Dad’s help with the down payment. He took his time thinking about it. He took long enough to where they sold MY Crown Vic. I felt somewhat dejected, but thought “no worries, I’ll just get a ‘93”. Little did I know that events were unfolding that would translate into literally decades of frustration for me. In 1993 the P72 fleet Crown Vic with Police Package became P71 Police Interceptor, and for the first time we saw those horrible, hurtful “available only to Federal, State and Local guvmint” words on the order guide. Suddenly nobody would sell me one. Years went by. I became a First Responder, a Ford salesman, wrote to Ford to plead my case, all to no avail. 1998 redesign came along, Street Appearance Package became a thing, P71 became P7Bs, still no luck. If you’re keeping track, that’s 17 years of obsession already. Hope, however, was on the horizon.

When the Tauriceptor and Exploriceptor came out, maybe because by then internet sales had developed fully, suddenly cars started popping up for sale that were, for all purposes, new. I became a First Responder again and resumed looking for MY ever-elusive Interceptor. There were more and more cars around. True, some had light transit damage repaired, but plenty were clean. Now I just had to find the exact right one. That finally happened in July 2018. Griffin Ford west of Milwaukee had an Exploriceptor exactly the way I would have ordered it other than it was in somewhat rare Kodiak Brown (little did I know this would not be my only encounter with an unusually-colored Interceptor) rather than black, but everything else was spot-on. Interior Upgrade package, SYNC, BLIS, big hubcaps, reverse sensing, no spotlights, the works. It was one of 12 units Griffin Ford bought from Peacock Ford here in Greater Orlando. They then registered all 12 to themselves, thus turning them into used cars. They advertised mine as having 50 miles, but one of the managers took it to his cabin for a weekend, so it had closer to 300 by the time I got it. I promptly drove it back to Florida, and thus my 25(!)-year pursuit of an Interceptor ended. Or so I thought.

Fast forward to this past February. I’d been thinking of trading in my Focus, was looking around for something different, when I came across something that made no sense. A vermillion red Tauriceptor with a laundry list of extras. Talk about something that doesn’t look like a police car! Not only did it have all my favorite options and more, but a VSO color to boot. 200 total miles. This fool and his money were soon parted. After a quarter-century of having no police car, I ended up with two in eight months.

They carry my fire stuff, they run great, but mostly it’s the uniqueness factor. Not many individuals have one, let alone two.

Pics of a utility (2018), got hit by someone who "thought" the police were chasing him, strictly a victim of circumstance. Oh yeah, 103 mph at impact on the offenders car.

Yep, passenger side dash is on the passenger seat(glad no ride along was present), damage transfer all the way back to the spare tire well. had to cut the 2 doors off the right to get equipment removed. Low mile (sub 10k), will be on gov deals soon, as well as the sedan that I posted above, the sedan runs and drives, but drags the rear wheels...lol

Personally, I have a fascination with cop cars.
1.They get just as much attention than a supercar, but cost far less.
2. People drive respectfully around you.
3. They are “heavy duty”, built to last (even the ones that aren’t FORD).
4. You can easily turn the interior of mostly any American special service vehicle into something that is not basic. Full interior swaps are easy and readily available for the Taurus, explorer, expedition, Tahoe, caprice ppv, Charger ext. If you know what your doing and like to work on cars. They are pocket friendly, so you can’t go wrong IMO.
