Has anyone tried opening one of their local PDs Tauruses with your car key?

No, but I know a friendly State Trooper who will let me try when I see him Monday. Virginia State Police was the previous owner of mine...

are you saying using your car to try to open an interceptor? i dont wanna go to jail, so no.

while its possible that an agency can have the entire fleet with the same key, most wont, for the exact reason why you're asking.

my buddy already told me the key to his cruiser won't open another cruiser. but each agency has the right to decide how their keys operate, there's no universal rule.

My key opens a Richmond, Va. area cruiser, but not one in my town of Fredericksburg. Now I know where mine came from...
