Is a db3 bypass needed for remote start install on a fpis?

Post by Soda_can_dan » Thu Apr 18, 2019 12:26 pm

I purchased a viper remote start for my fpis, brought it to a local shop for instal and he’s telling me I need a db3 bypass... I think he’s full of it cause there’s no chip in the key. He wants an extra $100 for the db3 bypass which I can buy online for $30. I have done some research and I’m almost positive it’s not needed. Any helps appreciated.

I simply enabled remote start via Forscan after adding a $20 hood switch and a Keyfob. I believe it's a function on the 2013+ models, it just needed to be enabled and a hood switch installed (so it couldn't "light up" when someone was working in the engine bay)... Was that not an option for you?

This.

It's a heck of a lot cheaper than an after market solution and you don't need to carry around another key fob.

That’s a good idea to have done. I am having enough trouble trying to figure out how or who can do forscan for my rear windows and interior lights (dark mode). However I really like the remote from this viper unit I picked up. What key fob did you use?

If you poke around the threads, you'll see a detailed one on the remote start. It includes a recommendation for the fob to use... It's nice because the key is built into it.

But the tool and do it all yourself. It's not very expensive.

I bought this one from ebay - Home Depot cut it for free (it comes with the Blank). You need to go though the add key procedure (it's in the manual).

That's the one, but i paid like $20 for two of them on Amazon.

PS - "China fakes" work just as well. I'm quite sure that's where the Ford ones are made.

I got those China Fakes as well and while they do work well, the buttons started to rub off in a few months.

I bought a cheaper one on eBay... about half the price... and it works, BUT... it’s very sensitive. I’ve accidentally remote started my PIS a few times. Think I’ll invest in this one... genuine Ford???
