Leaking waterpump and caughing and sputtering on hard acceleration

Post by MiekK » Fri Sep 14, 2018 2:31 pm

Hello everyone,

Not new to forums, but new to this one.

Looked at a '13 PI last weekend that was weeping water and needs to have the pump changed. The oil doesn't look milky and the guy says "his mechanic" says it's still ok, but needs to be done soon.

Went to drive it and everything was good until I pushed the throttle about 75% or more. It shifts down, the rpm's go up and it starts missing, coughing and sputtering. He said he's never experienced that before and hasn't a clue. After leaving and researching it, I'm not sure either...
There's no P0016 (cam/crankshaft position correlation fault) like you can get if the pump is so bad that the chain acts like it's a tooth off. Plugs? Waste gate solenoid? (is there still one on 13?)
Any advice on that would be great.

This guy has bought a few of these and puts in the center counsels, mirrors, cameras, and a few other features you don't see on the other retired PI's.

I don't want to go get this to find out it's junk. I never seem to be able to buy the cheapest one cheap enough...

4500 idle hours, 100k mi.

Thanks!

run away. the only certain repair is a new motor.

even with a pump replace (which doesnt make any $ sense over a replacement motor) bearings could have been exposed to coolant and youd be #*!&%$

he could be changing the oil after every test drive........

Fix it myself. Parts are only $170 or so.

ah, you didnt say you were experienced in chain driven pump repairs.....that definitely changes the calculus.
i still dont know why youd spend the $200 in materials plus 10-15 hrs in labor (roughly, for home mech) to repair a 100k engine that might have compromised bearings and definitely has running issues already. honestly, it makes no sense to repair.

any of the local yards- even lkq or ebay w free delivery. in my area, youre looking at about $600-700 for a 3.5/3.7 with less than 30,000 miles and a 6 mo warranty.

i have a 9000 mi spare in the corner of my garage.....got it for $475. i can drop it in over a weekend if the OE craps out and sell parts off the bad motor.

I guess I did not know that. Seems reasonable enough to have a spare laying around.
Still would like one of these cars though.

id recommend a pi to anyone who's cost conscious.......really great cars for the money. i dont buy into the incessant fear about pump failure as the fail rate is low; unfortunately, in this case, your potential car is a known issue

I guess it’s a matter of whether this guy is trustworthy or not and/or whether the purchase price compensates for the potential issues.
I work with guys that have these. One from the same guy this one for sale and he’s very pleased. We’ll see. There’s a lot out there and they seem to be coming with more and more options included.
Thanks

Changed sparkplugs when fixing water pump, problem is gone.
