Real help with my transmission fluid

Post by acdcking12 » Wed Sep 19, 2018 7:40 am

So I have a 2011 Taurus limited. I have had it about 2.5 years. I bought it with 9K miles. It now has 33,000 roughly. No issues with it. But I always worry about transmission fluid changes.

I talked to one dealer and they said 60K, and another dealer closer to me said 40K.

So do I wait or do I have it done? And will it matter if I do it early?

They each wanted $250 to do it so there is no price difference between the 2. So what would you guys do?

Look in your owners manual/scheduled maintenance guide. Dealers suggest all kinds of things because their primary job is to extract as much money from you as possible when you visit.
2000 Ford Taurus SEL (excellent car, sold to a friend)
1992 Mercury Sable GS (good car except for the tranny, sold)
Current: 03 F150 King Ranch SuperCrew
Other Fords owned: 02 F150 SuperCrew 4x4, 11 F150 EcoBoost, 07 Ranger, 01 F150 XLT, 98 F150 XLT, 96 Thunderbird LX, 95 Escort GT, 86 Mustang LX, 82 Mustang

At 60k i would do it myself in the driveway , drain 5 quarts and put 5 quarts back in and drive it for another 1k and do it all over again. Alot cheaper than $250

With these transmission the recommended fluid change is every 30,000 miles. If you don't do the tranny fluid change frequently you will have transmission issues. Use Mecon LV as recommended. Get 12 quarts, drain 4, refill 4, drive for several miles, repeat, then repeat. Mecon LV on Amazon 12 quarts for $72.00 cheapest I found. Check on Utybe for the 6F50 transmission or giggle it.

And the trans filters aren't serviceable. Drain/refill only.......I'd never recommend mechanical flushing

40k miles. Use the Motorcraft and drain/fill and repeat after 1k. Mine took exactly 5 quarts each time.

OK, so how do you change it? Pull the pan or is there a drain plug?

I went ahead and had mine down at the dealership. The shifting is very smooth now and I am glad it got done. They told me that the tranny has 2 lines above it that they connect into to do the transfer.

Sounds like a power flush - again, I would NOT recommend doing this on a non-serviceable tranny.

I asked them about it and they said that for this tranny, it was specifically configured for a power flush. But they did emphasize that it was recommended for my specific model and type of tranny. I went along with it.

I'd send you out to look at all the warnings about power flushes, but you'd probably not feel too good about yours having been done afterward.

A number of us recommended the drain/flush/fill and you went the other way. No sense spending a bunch of time expounding if you're not listening.

Then I apologize for wasting your time then.
