2010 Taurus 3.5 leaks coolant

Post by PtownBubba » Tue Dec 04, 2018 11:46 pm

A 2010 3.5 DOVHC leaks coolant out of this 'hole' , for lack of a better term. There was a small plug, that we removed,, in the small round hole,,like a mini freeze plug,, but the slot or loop at top was open,,,, is there suppose to be a rubber grommet or something to seal this. Or is the mini freeze plug not all there ? This is on the passenger side front of motor,, behind ac compressor and alternator,,,, when you pour coolant into engine,,, it comes out of this hole even with engine off. Is something broken inside that is allowing coolant to come out of this orifice,, or did some additional plug blow out,, ??

Sorry to inform you - that's the water pump weep hole. The hole is designed to be open to allow for the natural condensation/weep that happens in all cars. Your's isn't missing anything.

Unfortunately, if coolant is free flowing out of that weep hole, you've got a very, very expensive repair in front of you. I generally recommend just getting another motor or getting rid of the car (don't be a ****; disclose the seriousness of the issue).

I had a 2000 Saturn s that had a head gasket go and was using antifreeze. So what I did was drilled the smallest hole with a drill in the rad cap. With no pressure in the system this stopped the leak and I drove the car for a long time like this. This is not the fix but till you get time to get it repaired this might do and if it doesn't work all you have to do is replace the rad cap. It might not work if you are far south in high temps.

If it’s leaking and coolant hasn’t polluted the oil yet continuing to drive it will cause the catastrophic failure. If no coolant in the oil then you can just replace the the water pump. Not easy but can be done.
